Hepworth J & I School Autumn Term Week 12 Friday 26th November

Book Fair
Thank-you very much to all those who supported our annual book fair and helped us raise £240. We are splitting the money between the classes and the teachers will choose a selection of books for each class. Thanks also to Mrs Neill for organising the event and to the staff for their support.
Road Safety Meeting
We would like to reconvene our road safety group. This is a group of anyone interested in looking at road safety measures in Hepworth. Following the accident outside school a few weeks ago, I invited two of Kirklees Road Safety Officers in to speak to me. They made various suggestions which should help our proposals to Highways to get some measures put in place. If you are interested in joining us, we shall meet on Monday 17th January at 7.00pm.
Delays to Repairs to Fence in Woods
I have been in touch with Andy Gardner, the Public Rights of Way Projects Officer about the damaged fence along the path in the woods. His reply is below. I have followed this up, as we obviously don’t really want to wait so long.
“Because the fence is also incorporated into the revetment at the side of the path, repairs will involve reconstructing that part of the revetment. The works have therefore been added to our planned works programme. Unfortunately there are 14 projects ahead of this one in the list. The work will not be done this financial year, and whether it will be done next year depends on budget allocations.
I realise this may be disappointing information, but I can confirm that the works are programmed to be done in the future.”
Money found
Some money was picked up outside school this week. If you think you may have dropped some, please come into the office.

HEADTEACHER’S AWARD
Class 1 Olivia Blackburn for being a super class member.
Class 2 Sarah Goldthorpe for making super all round-progress and participating in rehearsals brilliantly.
Class 3 Heather Warrender for increased confidence.
Class 4 Alex Berry for all round hard work.

• Sandy Armstrong, Thomas Beaven and Robert Benn for making circuits for the KS1 production.

Christmas Cards
The cards have just arrived at school and look lovely. As you know each child’s picture has been incorporated on a class Christmas card. They were not very cheap to have printed, but are good quality. If you would like to order any before the fair, a pack of 8 cards is £3.50, or you can buy 3 packs for £10. You can choose to buy packs of specific classes or a mixed pack (2 of each class). We shall sell packs at the Christmas Fair as well.

DVDs/Videos
Following requests, we are once again videoing the KS1 “Robin’s Christmas Sing Along” show and the KS2 Carol concert. Both performances will be on the same video or DVD. Please let us know if you would like any ordering (videos cost £8, DVDs are £14). Thank-you.

Sponsored Silence
Congratulations to Robert Benn and Jonathan Prince who successfully completed a sponsored silence in aid of Children in Need last Friday. They managed to last the whole day without speaking, which is no mean feat. The boys have asked me to send their thanks to everyone that sponsored them; they raised a wonderful £133.97.
F.O.H.S. NEWS
? Thanks to all those who came on Wednesday night to wrap presents, it was a very civilised way to wrap- wine, nibbles, music and chat.
? If you have any donations, please could we have them before Friday if possible as it makes preparation a little easier.
? The hamper contents sheet is now in the office if you would like to write your name against a particular item- sorry about the delay!
? Please could we have some more volunteers to run a stall for an hour on the morning to help the fair be a success.
? On the day (Sat 4th) Santa leaves the Butcher’s Arms at 10.00am, pulled by Rudolph and then officially opens the fair. |Lots of families like to walk down with him.
? HAT STAND NEEDED! Can anyone loan us a hat stand for the fair?
? Message from Michelle Blackburn (686743):
“I have chased up outstanding orders and they are being processed. As soon as I get them, you can have them. However, if you require something urgently then please ask me as it may well be sat in my kitchen, as I like to hand out complete orders and some have only one or two items missing.
Thank-you for your patience.”
? We will be setting-up stalls etc from 2-45p.m. next Friday 3rd December in the school hall and would much appreciate your help. If necessary we will carry on after school as well in order to avoid coming in at dawn the following morning! Please come and join us!.

Hepworth J & I School Autumn Term Week 11 Friday 19th November

Well it’s been a beautiful day today and thankfully the heating engineer fixed the boiler fairly quickly so we weren’t too cold.
I really wanted the school to stay open today so that we could be together as we shared memories of Rosanna who sadly passed away on this day last year. Each class went for a walk and the children chose places to scatter petals or lay a flower whilst remembering Rosanna. It’s hard to believe that it’s a year ago. Our thoughts are also with the Gould family.
Chicken Pox
Since my course on infection control last week, we seem to be having more cases of ‘bugs’! Head lice last week, chicken pox this week! I just wanted to let you know to keep an eye open for spots!
Operation Christmas Child
96 boxes were collected on Wednesday ready to be shipped. This was a fantastic response – thank-you to everyone for supporting this charity.
Miss Ward Collection
We shall begin a collection for Miss Ward’s leaving present. If anyone would like to contribute, the envelope will be in the office.
Wed 15th Dec- Non School Uniform Day
We shall have a non-school uniform day on 15th. We will ask for donations of a £1 which will help fund party food/ presents etc. The children are of course allowed to wear party clothes on Thursday 16th as well.

Next week there will be letters out about show tickets, videos etc.

HEADTEACHER’S AWARD
Class 1 Georgia Rhodes for trying hard in all areas.
Class 2 Emily Mather for gorgeous singing and being sensible in rehearsal.
Class 3 Emma Southenwood for working hard and doing well in all subjects.
Class 4 Bradley Wright for really good effort across the subjects this week.
CLASS OF THE WEEK = Class 1
CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE
Christmas Fair Notices.
Wrapping Party: There will be a session in school next Wednesday 24th November at 8p.m. when we would much appreciate help with wrapping various items/ gifts for the Fair. We have quite a lot to do but many hands make light work as they say, plus wine and nibbles will be available to help us on our way! This is usually a fun evening and your help as ever is much appreciated.

'Secret Room'- This year we hope to run a stall especially for children to visit and buy presents for their families. This will be held in a secluded spot where they can browse and buy in private so keeping their purchases secret. Along with the donations mentioned on the separate letter which you will receive tonight, we would be extremely grateful for any small gifts which you could give to supply this. Examples would be unwanted small ornaments, chocolates, soap, candles, socks (for men of course!), unopened samples or small bottles of perfume/ aftershave or unwanted CD's or tapes.
MANY THANKS, F.O.H.S.
Young Musicians
Yorkshire Young Musicians have sent me some information about a scheme for talented young musicians. There are a range of activities funded by the government. For more information, pop into the office for a booklet.

Hepworth J & I School Autumn Term Week 10 Friday 12th November

Charity Coffee Morning
£123.73 was raised this week for the Kiloran Trust. Thank-you to the parents and children of Class 4 for their support.
Christmas Dinner
A letter should be out today inviting all children to our Christmas lunch on Wednesday 15th December.
Uniform order
Mrs Sykes is out for four days undertaking first aid training, but would like to know if anyone requires any uniform ordering.
No annual parents meeting
There will be no annual parents meeting on Tuesday as the minimum fifteen people did not request a meeting. The Governing Body will have their meeting at 7.00pm.
NITS
There seems to be an outbreak of nits at the moment. Please check your child’s hair- we are not allowed to check. Some chemists supply free ‘nit’ lotion but apparently regular combing with conditioner is as effective. I attended an infection control briefing this week and was given details of a website which may be of use: www.nits.net/bugbusting
The main thing is that nits are very common and will only go if everyone keeps a regular check, otherwise re-infection occurs.
APOLOGIES
The holiday dates on the back of the Annual Report were indeed wrong. I do apologise for any inconvenience. The correct dates are attached. Headteacher’s Awards to those who spotted the error!

HEADTEACHER’S AWARD
Class 1 Chloe Chawner for good concentration and hard work
Class 2 Emma Lord for being polite, helpful and hardworking.
Class 3 Rebecca Ward for being pleasant and polite.
Class 4 Trevor Stevenson for working really hard in maths and English.
Special Mentions to:

CLASS OF THE WEEK = Class 1

F.O.H.S.
Unfortunately we had to cancel our meeting last Wednesday due to lack of attendance and intend to hold it on Monday 15th November straight after school instead. We would very much appreciate your support in joining us in finalising our plans for the Christmas Fair. This is one of the main fundraisers in the school calendar and with the proposed purchase of the whiteboard and equipment in mind, we are especially grateful for any help which you could offer us.
Beetle-Drive
We will be holding our annual, extremely popular Beetle-Drive Evening next Wednesday 17th November from 6.30pm onwards. This is an excellent opportunity for families to enjoy an evening of the exciting dice-game of ‘build a beetle’, with chocolate prizes along the way! (Much loved by adults and children alike). Tickets will be available from next Monday at the cost of £2.00 per family and refreshments will be on sale on the night. See you there!

Free Fruit and Veg. Scheme

The Government are funding a free piece of fruit or a vegetable for each child in Classes 1 and 2. This scheme began yesterday and due to an administrative error at the distributors end, all children in the school were offered a banana!
Professional Development
It has long been recognised that staff development has a huge impact, not only on staff knowledge and skills but on their morale. Both of these facets impact on the quality of teaching and learning we can offer the children, which is of course our primary concern. The Governors and I are keen that all members of our staff team have opportunities to attend quality courses and training events. We do try to minimise these, but when staff are new to a role there may be times when staff are out more regularly. Another issue in small schools like ours is that each teacher is a subject leader for a number of subjects. Ofsted expect us to have a full grasp of the subject throughout the school, including standards of teaching and learning in our subjects. In addition to course attendance, I provide cover for staff to work on their subject areas. Some staff have given up their own time to undertake accredited courses which involve lots of coursework (completed at home) eg Mrs Ellis, Mrs Dixon and Mrs Neill. Mrs Neill has responsibility for a large number of subjects including English and is also the SENCO (Special needs co-ordinator). For the last two years she has undertaken SEN related courses which have really benefited us at school. This year she has been accepted on the NPQH course, National Professional Qualification for Headteachers. This is a year long course and is quality training for all those with a leadership role in primary schools- it does not automatically mean people will wish to go straight into a Headship.
To try to lessen the impact on the pupils, I always try to provide cover either myself or from a few regular supply teachers. This means that we are happy with the quality of teaching and also that these teachers know the school routines and the pupils.

Hepworth J & I School Autumn Term Week 9 Friday 5th November

Mrs Debbie Manby Appointed
Now that the formal confirmation has come through I am pleased to be able to let you know that the teacher appointed to teach Class 2 from January is Mrs Debbie Manby. Mrs Manby has been involved in Early Years and Key Stage 1 education for many years; first setting up and running a playgroup, helping in schools as a parent, becoming senior ETA at Netherthong and then undertaking the Graduate and Registered Teacher Training Programme with Bradford College and Netherthong School. She is currently working in the Early Years Unit at Linthwaite Clough School.
We have arranged for Mrs Manby to come into school a few times before Christmas, to get to know children and staff and to spend some time with Miss Ward and Class 2.
OFSTED INSPECTION
Yesterday we had a one day Ofsted inspection. The DFES have commissioned Ofsted to undertake a national evaluation of the Primary Strategy. We had a very intense day – staff were observed teaching, there was discussion with Numeracy subject leader, I had various interviews, pupils’ books were looked at and lots of documentation scrutinised. At the end of the day Mrs Poole, Chair of governors and I, received the feedback. Whilst we do not have to publish the findings as the data will become part of a national report, I thought you would like to know that we had an excellent report. We were really thrilled with the findings. In fact the inspector is going to recommend that we are highlighted in the report for the work we have been doing with our grounds.
Mr. Kilner also commented on the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the school and expressed his thanks to staff and to the children who were a real credit.
Operation Christmas Child
Please return boxes by 10th November.
HEADTEACHER’S AWARD
Class 1 Eli Beachill for good work in maths.
Class 2 Molly Heath for concentrating well and contributing enthusiastically .
Class 3 Caroline Hamilton for tackling everything enthusiastically and with a smile.
Class 4 Oliver Noton for working really well on the arts project in the grounds yesterday.
Special Mentions to:
? Harry Kenworthy for being polite and helpful with Mr Kilner, the inspector at lunch yesterday.
? Sandy Armstrong, Jonathan Prince, Oliver Noton and Rory Coslett for helping us Foundation Moderation
Before Half term we had a Kirklees moderation of our Foundation stage (i.e. our provision for Reception children). It was a day of observations, talking to children, looking at planning and records and talking to staff. We were really pleased to have such good feedback. “Quality” was used more than once by the advisor! It is good to have the recognition for the hard work put in by the staff.
Interactive Whiteboards
Two interactive whiteboards were fitted during the holidays. We will be getting up to speed using them when we have had some more training.
HUGE THANK-YOU to Mr Cambridge, (William and Tommy’s Dad) who very generously came and fitted electrical sockets and extra networking to enable us to run the whiteboards. Not only did he give up his time in the holidays, but he made no charge to the school.
School Photos
Please return by Monday as we need to get them back in time for Christmas. Any returned after Monday will have to be passed back for parents to deal direct with the photographers. Thank-you.

serving the coffee, helping with the bring and buy stall, washing up and clearing the hall afterwards.
In the early days, parents of children from all classes tended to support the event with a gift of a cake, or biscuits or an item for the bring and buy stall, but this hasn't happened so much recently, although the children from Class 4, who are helping on that day, do still bring items. It would be wonderful if parents of children in Classes 1, 2 and 3 also participated. The children in Class 4 could collect these items from school on the day of the coffee morning, and bring them up to the Village Hall. (As an alternative, items could be left at the Hall, as Mrs. Windle and I are there from 8.40am.)
The charity that we are supporting this month, on Nov.10th, Coffee Morning No.83, (always the 2nd Weds. of the month) is the Kiloran Trust; this is a charity which owns a house in London, and offers holiday accommodation and respite for carers. It costs £250 to give 1 carer a 5-day break. It would be wonderful if we could raise this amount next week! Stella Southam.
FOHS Messages
Meeting
Friends will be holding their last planning meeting before the Christmas Fair next Wednesday 10th November at 8pm in school. We rely on your support to make the day the success that it usually is and would love to see as many people as possible at this important meeting. This year funds raised will hopefully purchase and interactive whiteboard for Class 2 plus a laptop computer to run it. We also hope to buy a further laptop to run a whiteboard already installed in school. We feel that these items will be of immense educational benefit and would be extremely grateful for any help[p in planning/running the Christmas Fair as a lot of work needs to be put into this day. Many thanks. FOHS

Hepworth J & I School Autumn Term Week 8 Friday 22nd October

Pumpkin Party
The school was a spooky place to be last n night- all manner of witches and skeletons were dancing to DJH (Harry Gardner). The excitement of the night was heightened by an evacuation when the fire alarm was triggered by smoke from the disco. The children evacuated superbly – I was really impressed. We soon warmed up again once inside. Many thanks to FOHS for organising the event.
Maths Day
Wednesday was a day of maths; games, activities, puzzles etc. The children seemed to really enjoy trying out different maths activities and learning that maths can be fun.

On Monday we appointed a new teacher for Class 2. We are sure that the new lady will be a great member of the Hepworth team. I shall let you know more when we have official acceptance.

Interactive Whiteboards
Two interactive whiteboards are being fitted during the holidays. They are going into Class 3 and 4. FOHS are helping us by purchasing a laptop to go with one and they have also agreed to fund the purchase of a whiteboard for Class 2. This is a really exciting addition to our ICT provision.

Hepworth J & I School Autumn Term Week 4 Friday 24th September

CHANGE OF FOOTWEAR
Those of you who have had children at the school for a while will know that we have ongoing problems with dirty floors. We want the children to make the most of our grounds, but we still bring in lots of dirt from the bark paths. I would be most grateful if children can have a pair of pumps or indoor shoes at school which they can change into when necessary.
HARVEST
Our Harvest celebration this year is next Thursday at 9.30 in Hepworth Church. You are welcome to join us in our celebrations. If anyone is able to walk up with us (particularly Classes 1 and 2) that would be much appreciated.
This year we are going to make a donation to CART. They are collecting dried or tinned foods, educational stationery and garden tools to take out to Africa. If your child is able to bring an item on Thursday, we shall have a part of the service where they can be brought to the front.
COUPONS
Various companies have coupons or vouchers which can be collected to get resources for schools. We collect any you are given, but I don’t wish to endorse any goods particularly. We have just received some lovely modelling sand and tools courtesy of Persil stars and shall certainly collect these again.
FOHS
Friends of Hepworth met this week. It was great to see lots of new faces. See over for new dates.

3 FATHERS WALKING THE 3 PEAKS
On Saturday 2nd October three fathers, Mr Guymer, Mr Barton and Mr Wright are climbing the three peaks in aid of DEBRA. If you would like to sponsor them, sponsorship forms are in office.

Hepworth J & I School Autumn Term Week 3 Friday 17th September

FOHS
The first meeting of the Friends of Hepworth School is at 8.00pm on Wednesday 22nd September at school. We would really love some new faces as a few of our members have left as their children have moved up to High School. FOHS are a friendly group and raise significant amounts of money for school, in addition to organising social events for parents and children.

FOHS have circulated Webb Ivory catalogues today. If you would like anything ordered, please send forms into the office.

Parking
Please can I ask parents and carers to park with thought when coming to collect children. One of our neighbours was unable to get into her drive because some people had parked on the pavement and because of double parking.

KEYS
A bunch of keys were found by the gate into the woods yesterday. They are in the school office.

School Link
The School Link brochures arrived in school and look to have an interesting selection. I am conscious that we have also sent out the Webb Ivory catalogues today and do not want people to feel obliged to buy- School Link is not a huge fund raiser, but it does have some books at a good price that you may be interested in. If you would like anything, please could orders be returned by Friday 1st October.

Message from Mrs Leadbeater

Thoughts of Hepworth…
A parent once said to me,
‘I trawled all the schools in the Holme Valley when we moved to this area but when I walked through the door at Hepworth I knew; this was the school for my children.’
The parent in question sent all three of her children to Hepworth, they are all at High School now, happy and doing well.

After this conversation I got to thinking about what she meant, what made Hepworth so special? Of course it isn’t one thing but a combination of many, the list goes on and on. As I walked through the door on my last day with arms full of flowers and a heart full of good wishes I felt as if I was leaving a big part of my family behind.

It was then that I realised that the magic of Hepworth School is down to the supportive and caring relationships between staff, children, parents and friends. First thing in the morning I was guaranteed a kind word from Mrs Heeley or Miss Shaw, throughout the day parents might come in to help with groups or visits, forever supportive. Then there’s Mrs Ellis, what will I do without Mrs Ellis? Miss Ward pulled me out of a few holes with her artistic and musical prowess and Mrs Neill’s kind, calming words prior to SATs results have prevented much hysteria. Mrs Blackwell has brought tears of laughter to my eyes with one or two antics……I could go on forever.

Hepworth School is special, don’t ever lose it.

You gave me a fantastic send-off and I send many thanks for the wonderful gifts and cards I received. With best wishes, fond memories and much love, Gaynor Leadbeater

Hepworth J & I School Summer Term Week 9 Friday 25th June 2004

SUMMER FAIR—THIS SUNDAY
2.00pm-4.00pm. Please come along to support us and have some fun.
We are all set to have a great day. Sadly we may not be able to run as many stalls as last year as we haven’t had enough help, but there will still be lots to do. Just keep your fingers crossed for a dry day- although I shall be spending some time in the stocks so I suspect I won’t stay dry for long!

Hepworth Feast
Your children should have brought home their Feast ticket tonight, with which to claim their tea on Monday. On the back I have put some information about the Feast which may be of interest to the parents who have not experienced this special event before.
As those of you who have been before know, we are pretty pushed for space in the hall and are conscious of safety issues relating to fire escapes. The playgroup have large numbers on roll and so this year the joint decision has been made to issue feast tickets to Rising 5 children only. The Feast Committee are providing food so the playgroup can organise a separate ‘feast’ later in the week at playgroup. However any younger children are able to eat on the day in the public tea room (Class 3!)

DRY STONE WALLING
Classes 2 and 3 enjoyed trying their hand at dry stone walling on Monday. This was part of a project Hepworth United have undertaken to make a commemorative area for Hepworth Feast.

HEADTEACHER’S AWARD
Class 1 – Michael Crookes for super CDT
Class 2 – Hamish Wilkinson for super Maths work
Class 3 – Kate Benn for being such a hard worker especially in maths this week.
Class 4 – Henry Ward & Alistair Coldwell for being excellent Egyptian models at Bagshaw Museum
Class of the Week Award = Class 1 .

CROSS COUNTRY
Children that ran in the Neiley Races were presented with their certificates this week. Next week the team are competing at Meltham Moor Primary School.

SPORTS DAY
Weather permitting, our Sports Day (afternoon!) will be held on Wednesday at 1.30pm. Children will be told what team they are in. It is lovely if the children are able to wear a T-shirt in the colour of their team. Our Sports involve a circuit of team events and then ends with flat races. There are also parents and toddlers races- so come prepared! At the end of the flat races, there is a presentation of certificates and the team trophy. We then lead back into the classes. You may collect your child from the classes if we finish early, but we ask that children don’t leave before formal dismissal to ensure safety. We look forward to seeing you there. Please be conscious of the weather- ie if it’s hot children will need sunhats, cream, bottles of water. If the weather is really bad we shall try to on Friday 9th July.

DON’T FORGET:
No school on Monday as it’s the Hepworth Feast.
